Mild steel is an alloy of iron with small amounts of carbon. Its mechanical properties can be varied over a wide range as it is malleable and does not suffer from the brittleness issues of stainless steel. Typically, mild steel is magnetic, stiff and strong, and is cheaper to produce than stainless steel.
The main disadvantage of mild steel products are that they have poor corrosion resistance, and will rust over time. This is where our stainless steel products come into their own. Although less malleable than mild steel, stainless steel has a high corrosion resistance level when exposed to water and moist air, and it possesses higher temperature properties. As stainless steel does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as mild steel, it literally "stains less" but is not stain-proof, All of Howick Forge's stainless steel products conform to various British Standard stainless steel grades (there are different grades and surface finishes of stainless steel to suit the environment to which the material will be subjected to in its lifetime).
